Courtney's Story

Since starting his walk with ATLAS, this year has proved to be particularly special for Courtney.

Courtney started his journey with ATLAS in October of 2010 and became an official ATLAS client in December of 2010. From the very start, it was obvious that Courtney was what ATLAS was looking for in a client. He first became acquainted with ATLAS by coming to the GAP classes on Fridays. Immediately there was a “spark” noticed that led to him eventually coming on board as a male client once he turned 19 yrs old. Since the very beginning Courtney has been diligent in showing up for his appointments and
takes his walk with ATLAS very seriously.

During his filtering process, we assessed that Courtney had needs that we could help him achieve, which included a desire to learn more about the word of God, to have more confidence and to obtain full time employment. Some of Courtney’s goals were somewhat simple to achieve, but others are proving to be more of a challenge.

Due to the fact that Courtney has a learning disability, it was going to be a challenge helping him find employment in this tough economy. Fortunately for Courtney, we had previously referred him to Vocational Rehab through the Goodwill Job Connection Center. After numerous attempts to contact the VR Director, we were finally able to make a connection and she has assisted Courtney in getting the proper training he needs. Voc Rehab has afforded him with training to prepare him for the workforce and also has given him the opportunity to work inside the Goodwill store itself.

After discovering Courtney’s great work ethic and willingness to learn, the VR Coordinator felt Courtney was ready to “spread his wings” and try more challenging duties. With Courtney’s agreement it was decided that he was ready to be placed inside a restaurant for some on the job training, since his dream is to one day be a cook. ATLAS and the VR Coordinator set up a meeting with the owner of the restaurant who set up an interview with Courtney. Armed with confidence and his training, Courtney aced the interview and began work on Monday, February 7th. This is the beginning of Courtney getting closer to his dream of becoming a full time cook.

Courtney has always had the strong support of his mother and family who taught him there are no limits and to be all that he can be.

We are proud of the strides that Courtney is making considering all of the hurdles that he has had to clear in life. Courtney has eagerly attended Bible 101 classes over the month as is looking forward to taking the next steps.

We are excited about what God is doing in Courtney’s life.
