2011 Golf Tournament a Big Success!

A more perfect autumn day could not have been found as 115 golfers gathered for the Fourth Annual ATLAS Ministry Golf Tournament at Cuscowilla Golf Resort on Lake Oconee on Tuesday, Oct. 4th.

Opening the tournament was baritone Jeffrey Wells, resident artist for Festival Hall and OPAS in Greene County. This was a surprise appearance and a musical treat for the participants and volunteers.

Bright sunshine warmed the cool morning air as the shot gun start began at 9:30 with a four-person scramble. Temperatures rose throughout the day, but were still comfortable as the golfers completed the 18-holes.

Thanks to the generosity of those participating in the tournament, ATLAS Ministry, Inc. raised more than $46,000.   ATLAS Ministry, Inc. is a non-denominational, Christian organization serving Greensboro and the surrounding area. ATLAS works with local families who are deeply committed to change, helping them to reach vital life goals. Additionally, the organization teaches values and principles for success to students within the local school systems through it's HOPE division (Health Options for Personal Empowerment).

Doug and Jeanne Hesse, ATLAS volunteers, organized the tournament. They did a great job in making the tournament a truly special event. Also, a special thank you to Cuscowilla for allowing the tournament to be played on their award winning course.

Golfers were treated to breakfast, compliments of McDonalds in Greeensboro  and Starbucks of Milledgeville; a box lunch compliments of Chick-fil-A of Madison; and post-tournament cookies were compliments of Cheerful Hearts and the iced tea and lemonade compliments Cuscowilla.  Thanks to each of these organizations for their donations.

There were more than 80 local businesses and individuals who sponsored holes in the tournament. A silent auction offered some exciting items donated by area merchants and individuals as well.   Unfortunately, there was no hole-in-one winner for a car offered by Jimmy Britt Chevrolet Buick of Greensboro.

"We thank God for the leadership of Doug and Jeanne Hesse and for all the volunteers, players and businesses that made this event so special. The turnout and support we had from business was incredible. It is a blessing to live in a community where so many step up to love and serve others," said Mike Daniel, chair of the board of ATLAS Ministry, Inc. in Greensboro.

"The ATLAS golf tournament is my favorite golf tournament---I look forward to it all year. The format is fun and the fellowship is awesome. I am very pleased to spend a little money for such a worthy cause," commented Ken Johnson, Greensboro.

Prizes were awarded to first, second, and third place teams. Also, prizes were given for the longest drive, closest to the pin, and a putting contest.
